At Tokyo Dojo, the emphasis is not only on physical strength of the body, but on inner aspects of the mind as well. For this reason, it is easy for even elderly people and women to participate in Karate lessons. At Tokyo Dojo, the maximum age of dojo students is 86 for males and 79 for females. The percentage of female dojo students is close to 30% of the total. On the other hand, many dojo students have black belts from other schools.
In a typical Tokyo Dojo class, Karate practice of Kata aligns the central axis of the body and strengthens it. Accordingly, Karate lessons at Tokyo Dojo have a different appeal than combative Karate lessons typically offered at other schools. A young, muscular student from another school may be overthrown by an elderly Tokyo Dojo student. Or a man with a large body may be defeated by a woman with a small body.
Tokyo Dojo has a bright atmosphere where participants teach/learn from each other. For that reason, dojo students sometimes even break out into laughter during practice.
